USA Mr. J. Y.

〈An unexpected request. 〉
Allow us to introduce a pair of loafers ordered by a Japanese-American customer who lives in Honolulu, Hawaii. He loves shoes and found us on the internet. He intended to place a bespoke shoe order with us since he visits Japan on business regularly. To match his lifestyle in Hawaii, where it’s almost always summer, he had an idea for loafers even though this was his first order from us. After discussing the details of the order, he chose our original style center seam saddle loafers. He requested interesting details like a beveled waist and fiddle back sole for his loafers. Then, finally, he added an unexpected request. He gave us two keywords “Mt. Fuji” and “The Ocean” as a motif for his loafers. This is because he loves Hokusai, one of the most famous artists of the Ukiyoe art style, and he loves Mt. Fuji and the view of the ocean that are the representative motifs of Hokusai’s Ukiyoe. So he wanted us to introduce something related to these two keywords into his loafers. It would not be easy for us to realize his request literally without greatly changing the design of the center seam saddle loafer, so an approach to the task we did it not by expressing the exact images of these motifs, but instead by converting them into abstract ideas to be able to put into the loafers.
For example, we converted "The Ocean” into a deep blue color, and introduced this idea into the fiddle back with a shade of blue, into the quarter linings with navy blue leather, and with a navy blue polish on the gray uppers. Also, we used the peaked counter as an expression of the turbulent waves such as those drawn on the Hokusai’s Ukiyoe.
He was very happy with the result as well as the fitting of the loafers. I can imagine he enjoys his loafers in Honolulu, wearing a matching gray leather belt from us, with the story behind them and a sense of fun in his mind.
By the way, can you find the small detail that we put into the loafers as an expression of the other Mt. Fuji motif?
